Building Stronger Communities, One Neighbor at a Time

Initially formed as Theandric Life, the Neighborhood Resilience Project of Syracuse is a 501(c)(3) human services organization dedicated to grassroots neighborhood stabilization. We exist to stand in the gap where poverty, chronic stress, and systemic disinvestment impact our city's families and streets.

Our name at formation - Theandric Life - draws on a rich tradition of cooperative, purposeful work—the belief that true renewal happens when deliberate, compassionate human effort aligns with God’s purpose. We believe our neighbors are never problems to be managed, but individuals of boundless worth who deserve reliable community and uncompromised dignity.

Our Approach: Trauma-Informed Community Development

We do not believe in top-down or transactional charity. Real community health cannot simply be dropped off on a doorstep and left behind.

Working within the framework of the Neighborhood Resilience Project, our model is built on Trauma-Informed Community Development (TICD). This approach recognizes that chronic poverty, violence, and insecurity are not isolated incidents—they inflict collective trauma that affects the emotional, physical, and economic fabric of entire neighborhoods.

To build lasting resilience, our work focuses on four fundamental commitments:

  • Relational Care Over Transactional Relief: Shifting from "What is wrong with you?" to "What have you experienced, and how can we walk with you?"

  • Predictable Presence: Establishing reliable, long-term support systems that neighbors can count on week after week.

  • Restorative Environments: Creating physical spaces—around food tables and community gatherings—that offer safety, welcome, and peace.

  • Local Leadership: Investing in the strengths, wisdom, and leadership already present within our Syracuse neighborhoods.

What We Do

  • Food Recovery & Redistribution: Nutritious food is the cornerstone of family stability and community health. We partner with local food producers, grocers, and community partners to rescue quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, redirecting it directly into neighborhood distribution networks and community meals.

  • Direct Neighborhood Assistance: Immediate hardships often destabilize families before long-term support can step in. We provide direct, emergency stabilization assistance to families navigating acute crises, connecting neighbors with essential resources, supplies, and partner organizations.

  • Community Gathering & Shared Tables: Isolation fractures neighborhoods. We bring people together around shared tables through community meals and local gatherings. A meal shared across a table breaks down social barriers, fosters mutual accountability, and turns strangers into neighbors.

Our Core Values

  • Inherent Dignity: Every individual carries unalterable worth. Every program, interaction, and meal is designed to reflect honor and respect.

  • Radical Hospitality: Our doors and tables are open to all without judgment, red tape, or pretense.

  • Integrity & Stewardship: We hold ourselves to the highest standards of financial transparency, governance, and operational accountability.

  • Rooted Commitment: We are here for the long haul, investing in sustainable systems rather than superficial short-term fixes.

Leadership & Governance

Theandric Life is governed by an independent Board of Directors committed to rigorous financial oversight, ethical governance, and community accountability. We maintain active compliance as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, ensuring that every contributed dollar and resource directly serves the flourishing of Syracuse neighborhoods.
